Science & Technology Studies open call for new editors

DEADLINE: 15 December 2022

Science & Technology Studies journal, the house journal of the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology (EASST), is looking for editors to start as early as possible, preferably from February 2023 onwards. This is an open call for editors, which requires an application (CV and a cover letter, see below). A decision will be made in early 2023 based on the applications received and the criteria in the advertisement.

Science & Technology Studies is published by the Finnish Society for Science and Technology Studies (FSSTS). The journal is open access, impact factored, non-commercial, and does not charge author publication fees. The journal publishes four issues annually, one of which is a special issue.

The journal editorial team has representation from the various European STS centers and a broad base of STS topics in terms of thematic and methodological scope. We particularly encourage applications from Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe.

Science & Technology Studies is dedicated to the advancement of scholarly studies of science and technology as socio-material phenomena, including their historical and contemporary production and their associated forms of knowledge, expertise, social organization, and controversy. This includes an interest in developing Science and Technology Studies' own knowledge production techniques, methodology, and interventions. The journal welcomes high-quality contributions based on substantial theoretical or empirical engagement with the multidisciplinary field of science and technology studies, including contributions from anthropology, sociology, history, philosophy, political science, educational science, and communication studies. The journal is looking for editors for a four-year term who will edit the journal with the editorial team. We are strongly committed to a caring and supportive approach, as we see it as the journal’s duty to contribute to maintaining and improving both the high quality of research in the field of STS and the inclusiveness and healthy research environment of the field. As a new editor, you should thus be invested in the editorial team’s egalitarian “flat hierarchy” concerning publication decisions. You will have the space to influence the editorial process and you are expected to be able to work both in the team and independently. We seek editors who will edit the journal in line with these values as a non-commercial open-access journal and its broad and contemporary approach to Science and Technology Studies.

The journal has an editorial team including a screening editor, a coordinating editor, an editorial assistant, a book review editor, and editors. All editors in the journal are volunteers, except the editorial assistant appointed to support the coordinating editor.

The key duties of an editor are to

  • edit journal papers (e.g. research articles, discussion papers), in accordance with the principles of a double-blind peer review
  • occasionally coordinate special theme issues together with guest editors
  • maintain all contact with the authors and the reviewers during the peer review
  • attend editorial board meetings online and an editor meeting during the EASST conferences if present

The journal has autonomy and academic freedom regarding matters of publication. Management and production of the journal are the responsibility of the Editorial team.

Applications should be sent to the current coordinating editor Antti Silvast ( by 15 December 2022. To apply, please send:

1) your CV

2) a two-page letter of motivation with details of editorial experience highlighted as well as details about your visions for the journal in the future.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed online during January and the post starts in February or earlier. Please send any queries to Antti Silvast at
